FIA-ASIA DEVELOPMENT OFFICE OPENED DECEMBER 2004

Division Background

THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS OF THE FUTURES INDUSTRY ASSOCIATION AUTHORIZED THE ESTABLISHMENT OF THE “FIA-ASIA ”.

The derivatives markets in Asia are changing and expanding rapidly. Growth in the markets in Korea, China and other Asian countries has attracted the attention of the global players. Approximately 40% of the world’s futures trading are now generated on Asian exchanges and the opportunities for future participation are substantial.

The FIA supported the establishment of FIA-Japan in 1988 in Tokyo when derivatives trading began to expand in Japan and there was growing international interest in those new markets. FIA-Japan has been active in serving the local market and helping it to move toward international standards. FIA-J has served as a window to the US and other futures markets for the Japanese, and it has been a source of information for the FIA worldwide. We now plan to establish FIA-Asia to focus on the entire Asia Region.

The FIA Board has formed an FIA Development Committee to start the process of creating FIA-Asia. Mitch R. Fulscher, currently the Chairman of FIA-Japan, has been asked to lead the Development Committee and will be assisted by Fred Grede, former CEO of the Hong Kong Futures Exchange.
