European bourses plan silence for blast victims

Wed Jul 13, 2005 12:05 PM BST
LONDON (Reuters) - Bourses around Europe said they would hold a silence on Thursday in memory of people killed in last week's bomb attacks in London.

The London Stock Exchange, Frankfurt's Deutsche Boerse, Euronext operations including the Liffe derivatives market, Swiss exchanges SWX and Virt-x and the Warsaw bourse will all pause at 1100 GMT for 2 minutes. The Nordic and Baltic bourse group will pause at that time for 1 minute.

Trading will not be officially halted but members of the exchanges will be asked to refrain from dealing during the silence.

At least 52 people were killed on July 7 and 700 were injured when four bombs exploded on London's transport network.

Madrid said it was not planning to take part in the silence as it paused for 5 minutes on Friday to mark the attacks.

OMX Exchanges observe two minutes of silence

Following the recommendation by the next EU President, Austria, the OMX Exchanges will observe two minutes of silence tomorrow Thursday, July 14, 2005, as a mark of respect to the commemoration of the victims of the London terrorist attacks.

The trading system will not be closed down. However, Stockholm Stock Exchange, Helsinki Stock Exchange and Copenhagen Stock Exchange request that their members also observe two minutes of silence and refrain from all trading activities between 13.00 and 13.02 CET. Tallinn Stock Exchange, Riga Stock Exchange and Vilnius Stock Exchange, where the trading day ends at 13 .00 CET, will observe the two minutes of silence internally and request that their trading members also observe the silent moment.

LCH.Clearnet Member Advisory

Members were advised that as a result of the incidents in London yesterday LCH.Clearnet had invoked its contingency arrangements and switched operations to its Business Recovery site. We continue to operate from that site today.

We would like to report that all clearing activities continue to work smoothly and that all clearing events, including intra-day margin calls, were carried out successfully.

Our immediate plan is to continue to operate from the Business Recovery site until we are able to return to Aldgate House.

While this situation persists, please consult our website www.lchclearnet.com or our disaster information line on 0800 169 69 09 for more information. Members with particular problems should e-mail deborah.parkes@lchclearnet.com , who will arrange for the appropriate department to contact you.

We have received many messages of support and praise for the continuity of our services despite the evacuation of Aldgate House. We are very grateful, and it has boosted already high levels of morale.
