Do you want to lock in profits from a recent run-up in an ETF without having to sell the ETF position and its related tax event? How about buying some insurance against a drop in a turbulent market? These and other defensive strategies are possible using ETF options. Some investors believe options are risky, and that can be true, especially when single options are used speculatively. However, if you buy and sell options in conjunction with an underlying asset, you are trading strategies that are inherently conservative. OIC instructor Amy Farnstrom, of NYSE Arca, will discuss what strategies are useful to investors looking to access greater leverage, or to garner protection for an existing position in the ETF itself, a specific sector of the market or against an entire portfolio.
