Volume Statistics
The Futures Industry Association is the most frequently quoted source of volume statistics worldwide. We collect volume and open interest data on all domestic and international futures, options on futures and stock indexes, interest rate and currency contracts traded on U.S. futures and securities exchanges. In addition to monthly statistics, the volume report includes comparisons with previous year and year-to-date figures. The information is compiled both by exchange and by commodity group, highlighting significant changes. Each January, FIA compiles a year-end report on U.S. exchanges which provides information by commodity group for five years and graphically provides more than 20 years of data. Monthly and year-end volume and open interest reports are provided to employees of FIA Member Firms free of charge. Prices for non-members are: $300 per year for the monthly statistics and the annual report; $100 for just the annual report. To request FIA volume statistics, please email us or call (202) 466-5460. FIA Volume Trends Webinar, March 2009 Will Acworth, editor of Futures Industry, and Galen Burghardt, director of research at Newedge, discussed trends in futures and options trading volume during a 30-minute webinar held on March 26, 2009. The presentation was based on volume data collected by the FIA from 69 exchanges in Asia, Europe, Africa, Latin America and North America for the calendar year of 2008. The presentation covered the geographical distribution of volume, the distribution of volume by type of product, the ranking of exchanges by volume, and the impact of volatility on bid-ask spreads and market depth in certain benchmark futures contracts.
